Economic model predictive control with zone tracking

Abstract: Model predictive control (MPC) is the most widely used optimal control technique. Economic MPC is a generalized design of MPC that has received significant attention in the past few years. It removes the separation between optimization and control in the traditional hierarchical real-time optimization systems and addresses both optimization and control in one single layer. Economic MPC optimizes a general economic cost function which in general is not quadratic. This leads to significant challenges in the stability analysis, computation, performance characterization of economic MPC. In this talk, we will first review the fundamentals of MPC and explain what is and why economic MPC. Then, we will discuss why and how to relax the classical steady-state tracking to zone tracking. This relaxation gives more degrees of freedom to the controller to optimize the economic performance. A general zone MPC framework will be introduced. The applications of economic MPC and zone MPC to different systems will be discussed.
Dr. Jinfeng Liu is a Professor in the Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering at the University of Alberta. He received his PhD in Chemical Engineering from UCLA, and MSc and BSc both from Zhejiang University. His research interests are in the general area of process systems and control engineering with the current research focus on the development of enabling modeling, estimation and control methods to address the great challenges in closed-loop smart agricultural irrigation for water sustainability. Dr. Liu have published 3 books, 1 edited special issue, more than 150 journal and conference papers. His research has received over 4000 citations. Dr. Liu currently serves as the editor-in-chief for IChemE journal Digital Chemical Engineering, associate editors for IFAC Journal of Process Control, Control Engineering Practice, International Journal of Systems Science and MDPI journal Mathematics.
