Abstract
Driven by climate change, the electric power sector around the world is undergoing long-¬term technical, economic, and market transformations. Part of these transformations include an extremely high penetration of intermittent renewable solutions like “wind and solar”. The concept of “flexibility” of a power system is key in terms of balancing these variable sources. The talk given by Dr. Shi YOU will give a thorough explanation of “flexibility”, including what it is, where it comes from, how to enable the use of flexibility. Several practical examples developed by Danish and European research projects will be presented in order to facilitate knowledge transfer. In addition, there will also be a brief introduction to DTU’s experimental platforms that are designed and applied to support relevant R&D activities.
Bio
Dr. Shi YOU is currently a senior researcher with the Center for Electric Power and Energy (CEE) at the department of Electrical Engineering, Technical University of Denmark (DTU). Since 2007, he has been engaged intensively in developing theoretical and practical electrification, smart grid and integrated energy solutions that aim at enabling a future energy system with extremely high share of renewables. Some of his focused R&D subjects include energy storage, electrification technologies related to power to heat such as electric storage heaters and power to gas such as water electrolysis, integrated planning and operation, demand response, optimal energy management, advanced control and automation, microgrid and virtual power plant, etc. Shi’s expertise in this area was developed through his deep involvement in more than 20 R&D projects supported by various Danish, European and other international funding schemes. In these projects, Shi has played different roles such as project leader, primary researcher, coordinator etc. For instance, Shi is currently leading H2020 projects such as QualyGridS, SuperP2G, CombioTES and coordinating Sino-Danish EPIMES etc. Shi has (co-) authored more than 90 peer-reviewed academic articles, including approx. 40 journal articles.
